Angela Heidemann Angela Heidemann

Printmaker – painter – illustrator

I was born in Germany but have lived in England and Central Scotland since 1993.

My educational background is as diverse as my cultural one. From a degree in linguistics I moved into art and particularly printmaking, often combining language with my images.

My work is mainly figurative. I am not a painter of the inanimate, of still lives or landscapes. My life revolves around my family, friends and the many creatures we have accumulated into our household over the years. This includes several dogs, a cat, horses, hens and various other critters. I like to observe all that life and capture the things which amuse me and touch my imagination: What does it feel like to walk a dog in the rain? What is going on in the little dog's head when it looks at me like that? I am not interested in concept art. Modern art has sold its soul to cleverness and marketing. What I draw and paint is personal and speaks to the observer directly.

I find printmaking an ideal medium, because it gives me the freedom to draw and enjoy the whimsical and expressive qualities of my subjects in a very direct way. At present, I am mainly focused on etching, a technique with a rich past and an exciting future. Over the last years I have explored various materials and methods, traditional and modern. The possibilities of etching in combination with other ways of creating marks and shades on the plate seem virtually endless and beg to be explored for their graphic potential.

I am a member of Fife Dunfermline Printmakers Workshop where I do most of my work. I also hold memberships for Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio and Visual Arts Scotland.

My pictures have been exhibited in galleries and at art shows around Britain and particularly in Scotland since 2004. I also participate in Perthshire Open Studios regularly.
